This painting was inspired from a photograph by Bruce Dale in National Geographic’s book “Gypsies: Wanderers Of The World”. The photo held a fascination for me as the Traveller walks alongside his Vardo driving his draft Horse down the Appleby road. My imagination breathed life into the scene and gave the Traveller a story.
The Scottish highlands are in the distance and the farm fields stretching off as far as the eye can see. The Traveller is alone on the quite road outside the town of Appleby. The Roman (Appleby) Road crosses Long Marton Road, not far from Gallows Hill, named after the public hangings that were once carried out there. Yet the Traveller cares naught of the history of the road as he travels on. The Traveller must keep moving but he is in no rush to get to his final destination as the day grows late and the shadows grow long. The Traveller knows that should he not reach his final destination before nightfall that he can find a pasture to graze his horse in and that he will be safe and secure within his Vardo.
