“S.A. Hayes: The Horseshoer”
Downloadable Art Print of A Watercolor Painting By Romani American Artist J.A. George AKA; The GYPSY
Seeley Adolphus Hayes was born in 1845 in New York. Came to Kansas by 1880 and lived in Riley county in 1880. He moved to Topeka by 1900. Prior to 1910 Mr. Hayes was Horseshoeing at 511 Jackson. In 1910 he moved his business to 704 Jackson. In 1912 he’s still shoeing horses at the same place but by 1916 the automobile or the anvil has taken it’s toll on him and we find him selling candy at Ms. Ivy May’s candy store at 129 Kansas Ave. Well ole Seeley must have liked that snack business because soon after in 1921 he has his own place selling popcorn which he continues doing until some time after 1924 when he retires. He died in 1936. He now resides in Section 88 of Topeka Cemetery along with his wife Elvaetta is resting next to him.
I have not been able to identify the young man standing next to Mr. Hayes. It is likely that he was an apprentice horseshoer. Hopefully he was able to continue the trade in light of the encroaching auto revolution. I will leave it up to you to write his story…
